Moment of Joy

It wasn’t a good run this morning. Oh the sun was out, but the thermometer could not get over the forty degree mark. Forty is like a chin up bar for me, and this spring is doing precious few of them. More rain was on the way. I have not been running as much as I should, due to weather, and I was aware that my endurance needs attention. Endurance happens only when we push beyond the point where we feel like quitting.

So I completed the run with less than happy thoughts. “This is not a good day,” I said out-loud as I walked up my driveway. But in that instant everything changed. I heard a sound in the sky to the west of my house – I was searching to identify it, but even the unidentified sound changed my mood to joy. What was it? Nearly instantly, I realized I was listening to a loon. A loon in Mount Pleasant? My eyes traced the sky, as I heard its incessant cry. I love loons. On hearing it, I felt as though I was on a Canadian Lake waking to their yodels, or listening to them call in a coming thunderstorm on the lake where my wife was raised in Northwestern Wisconsin.

My eyes traced the horizon and I saw it several hundred yards away, flying high and fast due north. This time of year I have seen loons on the Great Lakes during spring fishing. Still it was a lovely, mood- changing surprise. Dejection dropped from me like when we toss off a jacket on a warming day.

Tomorrow, I will run again – to gain endurance – and if I am having another bad run day, I will remember how my inner life can change in a moment, at the call of a returning loon.
